The Millar Addition is a downtown neighbourhood with picturesque surroundings that include the Fraser River, Fort George Park and Connaught Hill.
History
One of Prince George’s oldest neighbourhoods, it is named after Charles Vance Millar, a Toronto lawyer and financier who saw the potential the railway would bring to Fort George. He tried to buy the First Nation reserve land that formed part of the new city site, but the railway purchased it instead. When Millar took the railway to court, they agreed to give him 200 acres of the reserve land, which became the Millar Addition.
Millar was an interesting character, and his eccentricities continued long after his death. In his will, he bequeathed the largest portion of his money to the Toronto woman who could give birth to the most children in the 10 years after he died. The contest became known as The Great Stalk Derby.
Homes
The Millar Addition is a residential neighbourhood with character homes and tree-lined streets, but it also has condos, rental properties and one of the best senior care homes in the area, Gateway Lodge.
