Prince George, BC is the host city of the 2015 Canada Winter Games. We are a winter city, and if you’re considering a move here, there are tons of things to enjoy during the coldest of our four seasons.
Winter Sports
The best thing about living in a winter city is the access to the kinds of outdoor recreation that just aren’t possible in warmer climes.
We have the largest cross-country ski club in Canada by membership. The Otway Nordic Ski Centre is just 15 minutes west of downtown Prince George, and the facilities include skiing, snowshoeing and dog friendly trails as well as a new biathlon range.
Those living in the Hart neighbourhood have access to a bunny hill right in the city at the Hart Ski Hill – fantastic for little learners!
Just 15 minutes east of downtown Prince George is Tabor Mountain. The Tabor Mountain Ski Resort is a great local spot for downhill skiing and snowboarding, and there are also cross-country trails on the mountain, though they are not track-set.
For those wanting to travel further afield, skiers and boarders can explore Purden Ski Village, 50 minutes east of downtown, or Powder King Mountain Resort, 2 hours north.
There are plenty of local skating rinks in Prince George, including the Outdoor Ice Oval. Snowmobiling trails are also popular in the winter months.
Winter Events
Even during the coldest times of year, there’s still lots of things to do in Prince George.
Popular PG winter events include a trip down “Candy Cane Lane” in the Van Bien neighbourhood to look at the Christmas lights put up by local residents. The Festival of Trees is a fun annual charity event that sees the Civic Centre filled with beautifully decorated trees.
On New Year’s Day, brave residents take part in the Polar Bear Dip at Ness Lake Bible Camp. Later in January, the much loved PG Iceman competition combines skiing, skating, swimming and running.
Coldsnap is Prince George’s winter music festival, and is considered one of Canada’s best winter music festivals. This could be your chance to see the “next big thing”; a number of Coldsnap artists have gone on to enjoy international success.
Prince George is a hockey town, and locals head to the arenas to cheer on their teams throughout the winter months. The Prince George Cougars are part of the WHL and play at the CN Centre. The Prince George Spruce Kings are the local BCHL team and they play at the Coliseum.
The Cinema CNC Film Festival is a great end-of-winter event that usually takes place in early March. Team Powerhouse Realty has been a major sponsor of the festival for a number of years. It’s a chance to see 10 great movies, typically independent and Canadian.
